Notre Dame AmeriCorps Members
“The I Have a Dream”® Foundation of Boulder County (“IHAD”), a school drop-out prevention program for low-income youth, is seeking applicants for full-time AmeriCorps positions for September 4, 2007to August 1, 2008.
The IHAD/AmeriCorps partnership is collaboration between IHAD NDMVAC and CNCS. CNCS provides funding and program support that enables IHAD to recruit AmeriCorps members to serve communities and youth.
Members will help further our ability to deliver services in literacy and/or transitions to the youth in our program (“Dreamers”) and their families.
Currently, there are five active IHAD-Boulder classes serving 260 Dreamers, 6th through 12th grade and 1st year of college, in Boulder County, Colorado (Boulder, Lafayette and Longmont). Two of the after-school and summer programs are located in low-income public housing sites and three are school-based at local middle schools.

Stipend and Benefits: Full-time members – responsible for eleven months of service, a minimum of
1,700 hours of service during the year will receive the following:
• A living allowance of $11, 100 (pre-tax) over the course of the year
• A National Service Trust Education Award of $4,725 (pre-tax) after the successful completion of the term of service which can be used for post-secondary education, vocational school, graduate school, or to pay back student loans
• Level of service averages 40 hours per week; evening and weekend service required in exchange for flexible time off
• Health insurance as part of the AmeriCorps health plan
• Child care, if eligible
Reports to: Project Coordinator
Responsibilities:
• Assist Project Coordinator to plan, organize, and deliver a year-round program of age-appropriate activities to support Dreamers' academic needs including an after-school and summer program.
• Tutor Dreamers as part of in-school and/or after-school programs, focusing on Dreamers’ needs in literacy, math and/or transitions. Maintain contact with school staff; review and record academic performance and attendance records of Dreamers; observe Dreamers in classroom setting.
• Help supervise volunteer tutors.
• Arrange a regular schedule of enrichment and community service activities.
• Mentor Dreamers on a regular basis. Focus on developing relationships with individual Dreamers assigned by caseload (10 Dreamers). Act as a positive role model and provide personal guidance. Provide support and encouragement to Dreamers; encourage high academic standards and emotional growth. Be consistent, dependable and keep promises made to each Dreamer.
• Help Project Coordinator promote parental involvement in IHAD and school activities. Organize parent activities, workshops, and discussion groups as needed.
• Develop college and career awareness and job training activities for Dreamers; helping to create meaningful job and internship opportunities.
• Assist in supervising and coordinating volunteer tutors.
• Maintain records related to Project activities such as Dreamers' grades, school attendance and IHAD participation, results of one-on-one intervention and family involvement.
• Perform clerical functions in the site’s administrative office in support of the program.
• Other duties as assigned.
Requirements: To be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member, one must be at least 17 years of age; be a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien; and have a high school diploma or GED.
Selection Criteria: We are seeking self-motivated, compassionate applicants who enjoy working with young people and a diverse group of individuals, including Dreamers, their families, IHAD staff and sponsors, teachers and school administrators, and members of the community. Two years of college and/or equivalent work experience in education or human services and bilingual in Spanish is preferred. A clear driving record and a vehicle are required.
